U.S Elections: McCain goes offensive against Obama; playing dirty politics

McCain has learned from the last campaign that the dirty guys win. It was last time when Bush's campaign were saying all kinds of dirty things about it like child out of a wedlock (while it was their own adopted child) and what not. Bush, apparently apologized to McCain but the damage had been done. Funny thing is: It worked for Bush!

So no wonder McCain's team is adopting the same tactic to outrun Obama. Will it work? We don't know. In europe, no one cares who ends up winning. Last eight years have been dismal and it can only improve, no matter who gets elected.

One advert portrays Mr Obama not as a politician with weak qualifications but as a vapid celebrity akin to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, whose images are intercut with his. Another says that Mr Obama sees himself as a messiah: cue images of Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments. Mr McCain has accused Mr Obama of preferring to lose the war in Iraq to losing the election, and (falsely, it appears) of refusing to visit wounded soldiers because he was denied a photo opportunity. (Had the visit gone ahead, he would no doubt have accused Mr Obama of using the soldiers for campaign purposes.) He says that Mr Obama will tax electricity (both propose a scheme to limit greenhouse gases that would have this effect). Another advert absurdly tells voters to blame Mr Obama for high petrol prices.

    This is by no means a one sided affair. As far as "playing dirty politics", Obama gives at least as good as he gets.

    On a related note, it has been many years since we have had any mainstream candidate spend more time telling us why we should vote for them rather than trying to tell us why we shouldn't vote for their opponent.
