Data Center Pedictions 2009- Part 2: Cloud Computing, MNSPs and Mobility will have long term impact

Today we have some great use cases (possible input for eventual practices) and amazing (Amazoning?) models coming out of the cloud. Clearly we see that the years of crunching experience that firms like Google (search, which I have often called a Query 1.0 Framework), and Amazon (which has moved, or should I say, had foundations laid in the Query 2.0 model), have adopted will be putting them in pioneers role. So these crunch gods are today leading the show, we do have many players such as Microsoft, IBM, HP etc go after this model , and many may seem to make a quick and an early tie with Google and Amazon, but is it enough for them to succeed as Cloud gods? We know one thing for sure, Amazon, due to its accidental choice of Query 2.0 platform , may have an edge above the rest of the parties. For now. But what does the future hold for data crunching at minimal cost? Obviously there is a dire need to think up of a business model which can seamlessly help eke uit a plan that will help firm...

VMware's chief Maritz determined to transform VMware to a Cloud Computing god

This is an interesting article. Maritz is on the move. "In technology, if you stand still, eventually your value proposition evaporates," he says, holding forth in a sunlit conference room at the company's Palo Alto (Calif.) headquarters. On Nov. 10, VMware announced it had bought the French company Trango Virtual Processors , moving it into the market for software that powers mobile phones. In late October the company launched its first advertising campaign, featuring customer testimonials. Even competitors say Maritz is already making his mark. "He's a great hire for VMware," says Marc Benioff , CEO of Salesforce.com. "He understands where VMware should go." Next stop: an ambitious project called the "Virtual Data Center Operating System," a complex piece of software that promises to help companies make their IT operations even more efficient by acting as a traffic cop among their hundreds of servers, disk drives, networking devices,...

Mobile Virtualization: VMware launching "VMware MVP"

Saw at Brian's site : Apparently VMware bought some technology from a company called Trango Virtual Machines last month which they're launching today as the "VMware Mobile Virtual Platform" (VMware MVP). The point of this is not so a user can run multiple VMs on a mobile device at the same time, but instead so that different types of phones can run the same OS image. (In this case, the Trango hypervisor or whatever you call it would "scrub" and hide the details of the hardware from the mobile phone OS.) The problem today is that each time a new mobile phone is designed, the OS of that phone has to be modified to work with that device's specific capabilities and hardware. With VMware MVP, the phone maker could install just the low-level realtime stuff on the phone (call handling, DRM, etc.), while the actual OS that the user interacts with could just be snapped in as a VM. This means that games, ring tones, email, address books, photos, and all the othe...

Netbooks, iPhone and other Mobile devices to make Cloud Computing reality!

And faster than you can imagine. My last keynote was a jab at the rapidly changing landscape where global economy, globalization, low-cost requirements and high ROI is driving all of us to have all the mundane things being done inside the cloud. We want to do cool stuff and forget about the rest. All a typical and even a high-end consumer needs to know is: You pay $ 29.95 / month and you have: - TV (gazillion channels but get started with a lighter version of the channel service) - Internet (actually this is the new cloud platform or intenet 2.0 on which ou get it all) - *Products (Maps, Apps, ...) - Basic edition and lots more (product development folks can define a billion services around this delivery model) - Device (Netbook, iPhone, Android-ready appliance etc) - *More cooler accessories such as Bose stuff * = Pay options could vary here. Anyways this post says it all in a different tone as well.

HipLogic brings virtualization to Mobile phones

Stacey (from Om's team) reporting: Newly christened HipLogic , which was formerly known as Numobiq, today launched a software development kit for its cell phone virtualization platform. The company’s product demo looks like several other mobile phone personalization efforts , but is actually a virtual machine running on top of the existing mobile operating system. The end goal, according to Mark Young, HipLogic’s CTO and founder, is to create applications that can truly interact with phones and each other, bringing the same level of functionality to millions of other phones as the iPhone has and the Android will. So far, it’s hard to judge how successful the three-year-old HipLogic will be with its mission, but it raised $4.5 million last January from Benchmark Capital and has ported its Java-based virtual machine to the Windows, Linux, S60 and UIQ mobile operating systems (BREW and RIM will be next). Developers can write applications for the HipLogic virtual machine and have them...

Mobile Computing: Google's first Android phone coming on Sept 23rd, $199

The first mobile phone to use Google Inc's Android mobile operating software will cost $199, the Wall Street Journal reported on its website on Wednesday. The phone, which features a slide-out keypad, is being manufactured by Taiwan's HTC Corp and will be sold by Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA unit, which plans to unveil the device at an event in New York on September 23. AT&T Inc, the only U.S. operator selling Apple Inc's iPhone, set the price of the latest version at $199 in July, setting a benchmark for smartphones that can surf the Web, manage email and other multimedia features. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, said T-Mobile USA plans to release new data service plans in conjunction with the Google phone that will be "aggressively priced." Google, HTC and T-Mobile USA declined comment on the pricing for the phone. Source

Cisco's CVO (Virtual Office), Cloud Computing and Mobile Generation!

Today's "virtual office" solutions generally require customer-premises equipment (CPE), but the rise of cloud computing-based services will allow people to be "at the office" from any location with an Internet connection, according to Cisco. This week the networking giant announced the availability of its Cisco Virtual Office service for Australia and New Zealand, which requires an 881w ISR (Integrated Services Router) as the CPE and a Cisco 7200 series router at the headquarters site, but this requirement will soon change. Cisco Australia and New Zealand unified communications manager Peter Hughes said in future the virtual office experience will be provided in a "cloud computing" fashion where all a remote needs is an Internet connection. Internally, Cisco has some 12,000 people working in virtual office environments, and the company is aiming to have that number up to 30,000 by 2010. "A VPN can be provisioned over a standard DSL Internet conne...

Cloud Computing and Mobility: Is iPhone the ODPH we're looking for?

Google thinks so. I obviously want more on that device but as you see, Phone is on a good start. Pretty soon we can all say good bye to all the desktop and other devices. ODPH: One Device Per Human . This product, whenever produced in its totality will fulfill the needs while replacing all the devices that today bind (while loosely bound to one another) and prohibit us to work effectively and efficiently. Here's what Google (or some of its staff) thinks about iPhone itself: Google, however, has its upcoming Android mobile platform, which could become a formidable challenger to iPhone. Asked after his presentation whether he would switch to an Android unit, Glotzbach took a wait-and-see approach. "We'll have to see when it comes out. I use the best device that there is for getting what I need done," he said. Glotzbach is not the first Google executive to tip his hat to iPhone recently. Rich Miner, Google group manager for mobile platforms, did so at the eComm conferenc...

Linux devices: OK labs demo open virtualization

Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) markets OKL4, a completely open source virtualizing microkernel originally developed at NICTA (National Information/Communication Technology, Australia), an Australian government-sponsored think tank. NICTA first supplied the microkernel (then known as "L4") to phone chip giant Qualcomm (story). OK Labs later supplied its commercialized OKL4 version to Toshiba for use in Toshiba's W47T phone, distributed by Japan's second-largest mobile carrier, KDDI. OK Labs subsequently partnered with FST this summer, in a deal aimed at porting the FancyPants GUI stack directly to OKL4's POSIX-compliant real-time execution environment. However, the technology being showcased at the ARM devcon appears to be featuring two instances of FancyPants running under two instances of Linux, both running as guest OSes on the OKL4 microkernel. According to OK Labs, OKL4 provides virtualization, high performance IPC (inter-process communications), and support for u...

Virtualization to boost mobile security?

This will allow companies to keep a tight security rein on the increasing number of different types of mobile gadgets by making sure that every corporate device adheres to the same consistent security rules, according to the analyst. But the bad news is that such virtualization tools for mobile devices will not be around until 2012--so businesses need to start bringing in policies in the short term, Gartner said. Speaking at the Gartner IT Security Summit here, Monica Basso, research director at Gartner, said more personal devices are being brought into the business space. She said this diversity--and the lack of security on such devices--is putting companies at risk. "Technology over the next five years will allow convergence of (mobile) devices and tools, and virtualization is one of the many enablers to allow this convergence," Basso said. The consumerization of mobile devices "is adding a lot of complexity to IT organizations because there is no one device that will ...
