Moonwalk and Caringo Partner to Simplify Data Migration to Commodity Clustered Storage

Milton, Australia – April 29, 2008 –Moonwalk Inc., the Australian developer of all-inclusive data management and protection software, today announced that it has created a joint solution with Caringo Inc.’s CAStor™ clustered storage platform to enable the fast and easy data migration from expensive proprietary Content Addressed Storage (CAS) systems to a cost-effective, high-performance CAStor environment.

Moonwalk’s data management and migration engine helps customers reduce capital expenditures by intelligently migrating data from expensive primary storage volumes, file shares and other CAS archives to a more affordable CAStor environment built around commodity hardware and a unique flat file address space. CAStor also does away with the complexities of hierarchical storage management with a single-tier architecture that treats all disks in a CAStor cluster as primary storage while delivering all the attributes of an archive. The result is a massively scalable clustered storage environment with the cost efficiencies of secondary storage, the high-performance of primary storage, and integrity for compliance archiving.

“Caringo is a perfect partner for Moonwalk with their approach to attacking the costs of enterprise storage,” said Peter Harvey, CEO of Moonwalk. “Caringo and Moonwalk have both embraced a vendor-agnostic approach, freeing customers from the dependency and extra costs of proprietary approaches to storage. A Moonwalk-to-CAStor migration is one of the smartest and most cost-effective actions a company can take to throttle out of control storage costs.”

“Migrating a complete CAS-based secondary storage repository to a new hardware platform is no small challenge, but Moonwalk has taken the pain out of the process, making it a quick and easy operation for enterprise storage users to break free of proprietary hardware platforms and enjoy the low cost, performance, assured data integrity and infinite scalability of CAStor,” said Mark Goros, Caringo CEO.

Moonwalk software delivers data management with metadata-level precision for all information on network storage, servers and clients. It proactively migrates, copies and moves data according to user-defined rules and policies based on criteria such as age, size, file type, file name, file creator and many more granular classification rules. Moonwalk operates across and between all major file systems, including Windows, UNIX, Linux and Netware environments, and all primary and secondary storage environments. Its stateless architecture requires no additional overhead and is completely transparent to users and applications, with no introduced points of potential failure to ensuring maximum performance and availability.

Caringo's disruptive CAStor technology is built on an innovative, 3rd generation CAS architecture, delivering the most complete set of features to address the content explosion as well as the growing requirements for compliance. It provides WORM storage, content integrity and authenticity meeting regulatory mandates such as SEC17a4 and HIPAA. CAStor is scalable, high performance and extremely cost effective content storage software that runs on standard, commodity x86 hardware enabling users to build massive storage clusters without the vendor lock-in of traditional storage products. The result is a clustered storage solution with unmatched scalability, data integrity, performance and reliability that dramatically reduces the TCO of enterprise storage.

About Caringo Caringo Inc. is a leading provider of content storage software and has re-imagined content addressed storage from the ground up with its flagship CAStor product. CAStor is third-generation technology that leverages the customer’s choice of commodity hardware for implementing a robust storage cluster that dramatically improves the scope and economics of content storage. Caringo makes content storage affordable, scalable, fast and easy. More information can be found at www.caringo.com.

Security: VMware Workstation 6 vulnerability

vulnerable software: VMware Workstation 6.0 for Windows, possible some other VMware products as well type of vulnerability: DoS, potential privilege escalation I found a vulnerability in VMware Workstation 6.0 which allows an unprivileged user in the host OS to crash the system and potentially run arbitrary code with kernel privileges. The issue is in the vmstor-60 driver, which is supposed to mount VMware images within the host OS. When sending the IOCTL code FsSetVoleInformation with subcode FsSetFileInformation with a large buffer and underreporting its size to at max 1024 bytes, it will underrun and potentially execute arbitrary code. OS Virtualization comparison: Parallels' Virtuozzo vs the rest

Virtuozzo's main differentiators versus hypervisors center on overhead, virtualization flexibility, administration and cost. Virtuozzo requires significantly less overhead than hypervisor solutions, generally in the range of 1% to 5% compared with 7% to 25% for most hypervisors, leaving more of the system available to run user workloads. Customers can also virtualize a wider range of applications using Virtuozzo, including transactional databases, which often suffer from performance problems when used with hypervisors. On the administration side, customers need to manage, maintain and secure just a single OS instance, while the hypervisor model requires customers to manage many OS instances. Of course, the hypervisor vendors have worked hard to automate much of this process, but it still requires more effort to manage and maintain multiple operating systems than a single instance. Finally, OS virtualization with Virtuozzo has a lower list price than the leading hypervisor for comme...
