LinkedIn Virtualization Group members keep growing!

We've just reached our first milestone and have 100 members! I plan to do something with our members, obviously events that we held in Belgium is one of the things, but given the fact that many Xen members too are in the group, I am planning to organize a think-tank initiative.

Like I said in the past, innovation in virtualization (and the whole IT domain as a whole) is just about getting started. The Transitional phase where we are going oh-so ga-ga over virtualization vendors, is the platform to start using the building blocks for the next Transformational age of Business!

So shortly:

  • You'll be part of a group where all members think conceptual, work in practical worlds and plan for a future that has dynamic data centers.
  • You'll be part of a revolution, you just won't be a "number" in yet another LinkedIn group
  • We don't care about numbers either. Action is what we want to focus on!
  • Participation and Community driven innovation is our strategy, and thus your strategy!
  • Want to participate in researches, analysis? We will work our asses off to get you guys some paid jobs across the world as well. Do you know someone who needs some work? Throw it in the group and let the one who is closest to pick it up an run.
So lots will happen and I intend to really do something with our members, something good I mean ;-)

Join us here for Virtualization membership and if you are a conceptual thinker, thought leader and love to get into research then I'd want you to join this one as this is about to take off soon. My advisors are pushing harder and soon we will be approaching a launch moment. We are looking for smarter brains who think out of the box, around the box, under the box, across it and all that multi-dimensionally! Then you should join Avastu Real-Time Research Group!

Imagine! All that collective brain power, it is something, isn't it?

Security: VMware Workstation 6 vulnerability

vulnerable software: VMware Workstation 6.0 for Windows, possible some other VMware products as well type of vulnerability: DoS, potential privilege escalation I found a vulnerability in VMware Workstation 6.0 which allows an unprivileged user in the host OS to crash the system and potentially run arbitrary code with kernel privileges. The issue is in the vmstor-60 driver, which is supposed to mount VMware images within the host OS. When sending the IOCTL code FsSetVoleInformation with subcode FsSetFileInformation with a large buffer and underreporting its size to at max 1024 bytes, it will underrun and potentially execute arbitrary code. Splunk that!

Saw this advert on Slashdot and went on to look for it and found the tour pretty neat to look at. Check out the demo too! So why would I need it? WHY NOT? I'd say. As an organization grows , new services, new data comes by, new logs start accumulating on the servers and it becomes increasingly difficult to look at all those logs, leave alone that you'd have time to read them and who cares about analysis as the time to look for those log files already makes your day, isn't it? Well a solution like this is a cool option to have your sysadmins/operators look at ONE PLACE and thus you don't have your administrators lurking around in your physical servers and *accidentally* messing up things there. Go ahead and give it a shot by downloading it and testing it. I'll give it a shot myself! Ok so I went ahead and installed it. Do this... [root@tarrydev Software]# ./splunk-Server-1.0.1-linux-installer.bin to install and this (if you screw up) [root@tarrydev Software]# /op
