Sun VARs getting tired of Schwartz's open source pitch

"What drives me crazy is that Jonathan spends a lot of time in the press talking about OpenSolaris and not about the architecture and density of Sun's x86 servers, or what continues to be the world-changing architecture of its Niagara boxes. As a partner I'd like to see him creating increased visibility and attention for those things at Sun that we partners can drive and make money on," said Rob Wolfe, CEO of AvcomEast , a Vienna, Va., Sun solution provider. and Whether or not the vendor is getting the desired traction from this strategy is an open question, however. Several partners said that out of 10 customers looking at OpenSolaris or Linux, maybe one or two end up running either on Sun hardware. But Sun-affiliated partners insist customers will pay for real value, as long as it is communicated clearly and emphatically. "If you look at the cell phone market, the model was historically to give away the handset and make money on the service or annual fees. The...

VMware lets iTX sell its entire suite

VMware managing director, Paul Harapin, said itX will be complementary to existing supplier, Ingram Micro, who has had exclusive rights to the vendor's range for about three years. Up until now, itX has been restricted to selling VMware's low-end desktop solutions including VMware Fusion for Mac. The new deal opens up access to all of the vendor's server lines including its flagship product, ESX Server. Harapin pointed to itX's strong software business and relationships with Sun, HP software, BEA Systems and Wyse as key factors behind its decision. Having a second distributor will give VMware better channel coverage and access to a different set of customers, he said. He added VMware was planning another aggressive growth year locally. Link

Data Center is VAR opportunity

VAR means Value Added Reseller Channel players selling into data centers could see a bumper year, after more than 90 percent of data center managers revealed they are looking into deploying server virtualization or consolidation. According to a Symantec survey released yesterday, the data center has become more demanding than ever, leaving data center managers with a laundry list of concerns. "We knew going into this study that data centers were a challenging place, but the real challenges came in terms of cost: SLA's [service-level agreements] are going unmet; budgets are not increasing as fast as expenses; and there are many challenges associated with human resources," said Matt Fairbanks, senior director of product marketing in the Data Center Management Group at Symantec, in Cupertino, Calif. I did get the Symantec's report via Julie (Dir @ Symantec) and will be making my own observations from that. Link
